Good day,

I am having problems playing Rainbow Islands due to a graphical glitch.  I do actually hate the game but I also love it for making me keep on playing and making me furious!

I have tried Automation Menu 231 and also GGN's patched up version from this website and they both load the game but with extreme graphical corruption, to the extent that the game is unplayable.  The screen loads up but with lines of distortion everywhere and nothing is clear to see.  This is the only game that I have tried and failed to play out of a hundred or so.

I am sure I am doing somthing stupid but it evades me right now.
thanks,
Congealed

Hmm, that is strange since the game has been tested on multiple machines. May I ask: a. What video zone are you in (PAL/NTSC) and b. In what did you run it (STEEM, real atari what specs?).

Oh, sorry:

A) I live in the UK, if that answers the question.  So it is PAL I think.

B) I am using STeem and using TOS 1.02 (UK).  Maybe I need to use a US TOS for that game?

No, it works with tos 1.02UK. But maybe you need to increase the RAM size in STEEM? My guess is you are using the default 1MB while this patch needs 2MB. Increase it to 4 then and everything will work as it should.

ahem!

Actually I just checked my Automation bible. Rainbow Islands on A231 only runs on a real ST, Saint and Steem produce diagonal GFX corruption. Not sure about Hatari tho.

Thanks for the input guys.  Is seems weird that this game causes such problems to run in emulation.

I did get the game to work a little in STeem:
What happened was that I loaded up the patched version and it loaded up without corruption BUT then it just loaded to a screen that asked me to insert the Rainbow Islands Data Disk and I could not do that because I don't know where to get that disk.

But the A231 version is not working like you said.

I've just checked Alien/PP's version of Rainbow Island. It works fine in Steem.. weird!! I'll check Neil's version to see why the corruption in happening.

Hi there,

Like CJ says, my version should work ok, because I know why the automation version doesn't work and I took the necessary steps to fix it when I did my version Smiley

(for the curious, Vapour was copying longwords instead of words to the palette Wink)

Anyway, my vacation is off tomorrow, so I'll probably check it out tomorrow afternoon or friday. Hang on....

I just read this:

You simply press space at that point Smiley.

P.S. It is possible to get v231 working with steem debug, but since we know the bug it's better to do it proper and release a v2 rather than give out silly instructions and provide millions of AUTO folder programs (which is what some people seem to think is elegant). So, #231v2, coming soon Cheesy

GGN,

1) I did read the on-screen instructions and press space but that was not working for some reason.  I am sure the new improved version will work!

2) It is possible to make it work.  How?  Don't worry if it is long and complicated or you have better things to do.  I just can't help wondering.

I think that Rainbow Islands is a bit touchy with keyboard input. I'd suggest after pressing a key in my intro not to touch any keys or mouse or joystick until you get the "press space" prompt. My fix has worked fine on at least 3 steem setups (while testing at least), and 6 different machines including falcons, mega stes, stes etc.

Well, I just noticed that there is already a patch for this in steem! Just boot the menu and when you get the corrupt gfx, just push the patch button in steem, select and apply the Rainbow Islands item and you're done Smiley

The Automation version of Rainbow Island has been fixed, so this will be released as a V2.
