Title: Loader Sources
Post by CJ on 28.03.07 at 12:46:22
I've been pondering putting a few of the loader source files up on the website for some time now, in the hope of kindling some sort of community interest in actually helping out with the falcon/hd fixing.

Would there be any inteterst in this?

I believe I'm far away from being helpful here.

You may have browsed the web for a long time to find useful docs,
and providing links to the ones that changed your life, if any,
could be a good idea too.

Hmm, no matter how I read your post, it comes out like this: you're suggestig a thread of useful internet links? If yes, you're free to create one!

What CJ suggests is something we're thinking of doing: post some of our loaders' source code and write some things about how we go around and create those patches. In any case, if someone wants to try this he can contact us and we'll try to help.

I could call that "a doc that changed your life".

I meant I believe that source code only wouldn't be enough and asked if there is a general doc,
a "bible" (from D-Bug or not) somewhere which helped you to write them.

Ok, then more or less we're saying the same thing.

Stay tuned for that.....

OK i've been pondering this a while...

You're right, source code on its own is pretty useless - even if every single line is commented.  However, a doc that describes what we did on game-x is also pretty useless, as its just a guide on how to patch game-x and probably wont work on anything else.

So, this is quite a tricky thing to tackle and I'm not entirely sure how to go about it.

For example, Canon Fodder, LXS, Blood Money, Arctic Moves, Indigo, Lorna and Gauntlet II are so wildly different in the methods and ways in which we patched them that a generic document could never be written.  And in the case of Cannon Fodder and Gauntlet II there were other (non patch) issues because of the HD requirements.

So I guess what I'm rambling around to saying is this...   If anyone can come up with something that might help, suggest it here and we'll try to give it a go if its possible.
