Title: Automation #004 (Xevious)
Post by simonsunnyboy on 14.04.12 at 09:31:42
I will start by reviewing the game Xevious from Automation #4

Here we have an arcade conversion from the early ST days, probably made in 1986 or early 1987, the game shows that coding techniques on the ST weren't as advanced compared to later shooter games.

The conversion is pretty faithful, the original game is from 1982 afterall. No bonuses to collect, small sprites, large side panel. The vertical scrolling is fluent.

The player blasts the evil buddies and drops some bombs on their bunkers - and that's it.

The music is awful bleepy, the YM can do a lot better than this.

Only recommended for diehard collectors of early ST games...

I have to disagree with this. Xevious itself is a classic shooter. So much so that Namco's HQ is called 'The Xevious Building'

This is actually one of the best home ports of this game available, and is pretty faithful to the original arcade source material.

Recommended to any Xevious fan.

Very cool conversion. It plays well enough and is fun.
There is some slow down here and there and Man, did they butcher the trade mark Xevious song that plays when you start a new life.  :D

Thanks!

It's close to the 1982 arcade machine, I agree.
As always a matter of taste ;)

Haven't played the ST version yet!! ( Is this release Falcon compatible? )

I have however played the 7800 version, while graphically limited the gameplay is there! and there is quite a lot of game to be had! lots of different enemies, waves, aerial, ground targets, tanks, end of level bosses! Must have been quite some progression from Space Invaders back in '82!

I'd recommend checking out the 'similar' title from Rainbow Arts called 'Sky Fighter'

cheers  8-)
