Does a graphic launcher exist for these HD fixes?

Hello,

Love all the HD/030/TT/Mega STE patches to many of the classics.

I was curious if there is a nice graphical front end that exists that could be used to select and launch all these games?

I use a frontend called mamewah on an arcade cabinet I built and think something similar would be very cool on the Atari machines.  I use mamewah to launch various Windows versions of retro remakes of classics on the arcade machine.

Here are a couple screenshots of the frontend under windows.  The ST version is void of any titles in the menu, but the jaguar version gives you an idea of how it works.

Basically it is just a menu that you can scroll up and down and whatever game title is highlighted it shows a screen shot to the right.

Something like this (on a smaller scale so it works with ST/STE/TT/Falcon would be awesome.  Something that allows you to scroll up and down through a menu with the joystick and see screen shots on the right and let the user hit fire on the joystick to launch it.  Would probably make sense to support the up and down arrow keys and enter to launch also.

Not sure if anything like this exists currently, or if there is any interest in something like this beyond just me.  I know there are some text based launchers that could do this, but the graphical approach with a screen shot makes it nice for people who aren't as familiar with all the ST titles  to see a pic of the game and that might draw them in to play it.

It seems like with all the HD patches, and already HD installable titles it would be a useful front end.

The TT and Falcon could do better resolution front ends, but it would still be useful on the ST's also.

Curious what others think?

Hi,

In theory it doesn't sound all that bad, but in practice I can see 2 or 3 problems

a) Our patches don't exit to desktop (at least not yet), so you'll have to reboot and load the selector manually
b) Someone will have to do the dirty work and collect all info, take screenies, hunt for manuals etc which is too time consuming (imagine having to delay a patch just because we can't find enough data for the interface!)
c) Most of the interfaces are, imho, fugly and not that usable Smiley! And to make different screenies etc for tt and falcon would mean at least 3x the work.

Ok, I realise that I'm writing the above under the scope of a developer (i.e. actually having to implement this Wink). As a user, yeah, it wouldn't be bad to have a framework for something like that.

Didn't think about the clean exit.  I agree that would make things more cumbersome, but for me at least if I set it up so the menu loaded on bootup it wouldn't be so bad.

As for someone doing the dirtywork, that wouldn't be necessary unless the developer wanted it that way.  With mamewah I do my own screenshots.  Many just grabbed from a google image search.  Not sure why manuals would be needed though.

I was just invisioning something where you put files with a .lnk (or some) extension on them in a specified folder (maybe called games).  Those files are just text files with one line in them.  That being the path to the executable to run for a specific game.  Than just have a snaps folder with an image file that is the screenshot.  The name of that screenshot file matches the name of the lnk file in the games folder.  That way the launcher frontend can automatically find new titles just by the user creating the lnk file and placing it in the games folder, and throwing a screen shot in the snaps folder.  They could even skip the screenshot if they wanted.

I may take a stab and writing this as I realize it may only be useful to me.  I do appreciate the feedback.
