Where TIme Stood still (WTSS)

Well here we go a stab at a review....

A classic Denton Designs 8-bit game (speccy - and writing this on the 30th Anniversary of Sir Clive's baby too!) which we're lucky enough to have grace our ST's and somewhat snigger than the Amiga never got it Smiley

The game itself is an eerie, 3D spectacular that leaves you wondering what is just around the next isometric corner.  As the macho, chest displaying head hero Jarret, you are joined by survivors Clive and Gloria (father and daughter) and her fella Dirk.  Each character has their own attributes that you have to use to your advantage to save the entire party from the cannibals, cavemen and dinosaurs that roam, however should one loose their way then its hopeless - for example Dirk looses his sense once the beautiful Gloria has hit extinction - Perhaps think of looking after your party as a very basic take on the modern days Sims series.

So enough waffle - what about game play?  Gorgeous graphics yes?  Substance?  Yes and in abundance too.  Just dont get carried away watching those lovely graphics which despite being monochrome in the playing area are crisp and work well.

You will get frustrated howevre should you start to die and have to keep repeating tasks (thank God for being able to save game states in emulators!) and end up waiting for your party to be eaten by a T-Rex or have that Pterodactyl swoop low and remove a party member.

WTSS is an excellent game that shows that with thought and a talented team behind it something original can occur that will grip you and frustrate you equally.

Xor

And here we have a really hardcore puzzle. So you might wanna skip the review if you're uninterested Smiley.

The game consists of 15 levels where you have to collect quite a few facade icons and navigate your way to the exit. You control 2 shield-like sprites, one at a time and you can switch between them almost whenever you like. Sometimes their paths cross, sometimes not. When they do you usually have to do more complex stuff where both the shields play their part. Maze elements include fish (they drop down when there's empty space), birds (these move left when there's empty space), bombs and poisons (explode adjacent tiles), dolls (if you push them in one direction they move until they hit something solid), teleporters, blocks that you can clear only if you move horizontally along them, or vertically, and probably some others.

Like I mentioned, all levels part from the first 2 or 3 are very hard. It's easy to make a mistake and then you have to restart the level completely. Your shields can be killed (for example by getting in the way of a falling block or caught in an explosion). The game itself makes the puzzles better, because in order to scroll right, the screen jumps in 32 pixel intervals and then starts jumping for as long as you keep the joystick in one direction. This can force you to make an error very easily. You can also collect a map of the level which is scattered in 4 parts, but of course (of course!) it doesn't show where your 2 sprites are, so you have to really get the feeling of the level. Also, don't press space by accident or you'll be forced either to watch a replay of the level or exit to the level selector - "whoops!" (as the game tells you when you lose one of your shields Smiley).

To summarize, a really hardcore puzzle, a bit flawed on the implementation, you have been warned!.
