Found Glitch on 2 Disks--Need Help Please

On Automation disks-177 and 209.Both, Phantasie and Phantasie 2 have issues when you start a new game. When you create a new character(fighter, priest, wizard),the stats are all 3 for str, int, ect. and you have 0 hit points.Adversly, a character like a ranger starts out with around 90 hit points.Other stats are incorrect as well.I played these games when I was a kid and would like to play them again. Is there anyway to fix this or a patch I can get?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!I love these games.

Hi there,

I tried my copies of #177 and #209. Oops  Embarrassed

Immediately I suspected the packer. So I used New Depack and unpacked all the files on that disk on my steem partition. Then I ran phantasie and everything was ok Cheesy

I only tried it for #209, but it should work for #177 too. I unpacked all the files because I couldn't easily decide what files phantasie uses (remember there are other games on both disks).

So I have to ask you a couple of questions now:

a) Can you depack the files yourself or do you want assistance? (hint, new depack is your friend Wink )
b) Do you use a real ST to play the game or steem? This is crucial, because then we have to find what files phantasie uses as I doubt that when depacked the files will fit in 1 disk. Of course if you're using a real ST and hard drive then you might just get away with copying all the files to a folder and unpacking them there Smiley

I await for your answer...

Thank you very much for your reply. This sounds promising.I resorted to playing P1 on the C64 but the graphics are much worse. These versions are much better.
I'm using steem on XP.I've never used new depack before but I'll download it and check it out.

*Edit*I loaded the .st files into new depacker and it said the files are probably unpacked or a new packer was used. Then, it gave me no options to do anything. What process do I need to follow?

Ok, since you will use steem you can do the following (example given for phantasie 1):

a) Create a partition in steem
b) Make a directory on that named 'phant1' for example
c) Boot in GEM, mount the .st image in drive a, then copy all of the disk contents (not the .st file) to the directory 'phant1'
d) Load new depack, press 'load', then go inside directory 'phant1', and click ok. Don't select any files! Then the file selector will appear again, so go ocnce more into 'phant1' and click ok. Again, don't select any files.  New depack will start loading and unpacking automagically all files recursively.
e) If you do this correctly then you can switch to low resolution, go to 'phant1' and double click on the executable. The game will load (note that there shouldn't be any background flashes now Smiley ) and function as it should.

If you're still baffled, just tell me and I'll prepare a couple of zips for you!

Whoohoo! Grin Your instruction were very good and straightforward. After many bombs I finally got it to work. You are the man(or woman),don't know, lol. It took me a few hours. For some reason one of the .st files I had was missing 5 files, couldn't tell ya why.My steem GEM wouldn't load for some inexplicable reason, even after deleting the .ini file. Then, I was clicking on the exe without the .st file being in the A:.All I was getting was 4 bombs and a crash.Even managed to crash steem and froze my comp and screwed up my XP boot. CryLOL!
Anyhow, I got it and just wanted to say ThanyYou VERY much!!!You were of great help.I would have never got it working without you.

That's good to hear Smiley. TBH it would be easy for me to make 2 zip files with the games unpacked, but:

a) I was WAY too bored at the time
b) I want to help you guys advance to 'advanced hacker and packer' status Wink (which is the highest status on this forum!)
c) If you realise how to do stuff like that, maybe for the next game that will be problematic (I hope not Smiley ) you'll at least try some stuff out before saying "it doesn't work, fix it for me". I personally want people visiting this forum to advance their computer skills. Who knows, maybe some of you will start helping us out more actively! For that reason I'll be definitely writing some tutorials on the whole patching/fixing business.

Again, glad to hear you sorted it out Smiley

Well, phantasie II is already fixed and available for downloading here:

http://www.dbug-automation.co.uk/falcon/may07/phant2.zip

Now then, I don't want to write a steem tutorial here, so you'll either have to ask (or search for one), or take your time and familiarise yourself with the machine & emulator. Some quick tips: a) GEM = the st graphic user interface, b) Steem partition = press the disk button on steem and click hard drives. Use your imagination Wink

(what I'm actually saying here is: there is no such thing as free lunch. It ain't that complicated though!)

alas! i've found a "NEW_DPAK.PRG" which i tried to launch but the following error appears:

you must run new depack in an 80 column mode

yet another mystery...

any ideas?

of course you could get rid of me and send the zipped files you mentioned earlier for the other guy
i'd really appreciate it Smiley

Aha, you're making progress!

Generally 80 column mode = resolution which is at least 640 pixels wide. For a normal st, this is medium or hi resolution. Check the desktop's "options" menu Smiley

difficult difficult... that's a matter of point of view...

Ah well this n00b is a slow learner and a neophyte programmer Happy;

thx again for helping me out specially with the (to me) very specific terms like gem and 80 column mode...

however... I managed to find an original phantasie I and Phantasie II disk from a friend
but when i try to transfer my characters from I to II they have lvl 0 and 0/0 hit points...

i tried the solution presented somewhere else on this boards
but it doesn't work either
i tried with the phantasie II disk available through the link on said thread to no avail...

ahem... any ideas?  Huh

I transfered my whole bunch of characters but with the same results...
i did the following:

-opened the utility
-clicked on transfer from I to II
-put my disk phant1copy.st into drive a
-click ok (this is the part that i find to happen so fast)
-put your disk phant2 in drive a
-click ok (this takes a bit more time)

then i restart by double-clicking on your disk phant 2 because when i use the utility to go to the game it asks for a game disk and yours is not accepted this way

so a start a game by double-clicking on _phanrun.prg and i select continue saved game and all characters are there but with lvl 0 and 0/0 hp

question: are they supposed to revert to lvl 1 or keep their current lvl?

if they are supposed to revert, well, i can 'train' them from lvl zero to lvl 1 at no cost

other question: they seem to start with 1024 xp. Is it the way it is supposed to be?

thx Smiley

Honestly I haven't ever done this before so I can't help further. Any other takers?

Small suggestion, but why not start off with new characters? That's where all the fun is in these games - take fresh characters and lead them to slaughter!

You get to keep some of the artifacts from Phant I. That's why it's fairly important to take your chars across. I don't remember if they reset to L1 on Phant 1 to Phant 2, But they do from Phant 2 to Phant 3. So it would make sense. Smiley
